I know one of the tornadoes from the Enigma Outbreak on February 19, 1884 started south of Birmingham and hit the Leeds, AL area too. It was rated F4 by Grazulis.
This tornado would be devastating today. It started pretty close to the location of the ABC 33/40 television station (Oxmoor region of Homewood) and moved ENE. Today, that goes through highly populated areas of Homewood, northern Hoover, and Vestavia Hills. Assuming it was a continuous path, of course.

We're only talking semantics here and it doesn't affect the weather side of this, but ABC 33/40 is actually down in Riverchase, versus the other three main stations that are in Homewood. ABC 33/40 is a stone's throw from the I-65 exit with Valleydale Road and is actually in far far northern Shelby County.
