Interesting...a woman keeps a blog of her experiences in Tok, Alaska. Check out this recent entry which includes a picture of a Davis Vantage 2 weather station console.

Can you imagine stepping outside and experiencing a temperature change of 145 degrees! Amazing!

Very interesting reading. Nevertheless...the NWS believes the extremely low numbers are likely in error...not that -63 makes it much better...

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FAIRBANKS AK
1216 PM AKST FRI JAN 9 2009

...TOK TEMPERATURE REPORTS...

REPORTS HAVE CIRCULATED ABOUT EXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURE READINGS
IN TOK. ONE PARTICULAR STATION HAS REPORTED A LOW OF 77 BELOW
ZERO...WHICH IS LIKELY IN ERROR. THE INSTRUMENT AT THE AUTOMATED
STATION LOSES SIGNIFICANT ACCURACY AT VERY COLD TEMPERATURES AS
HAS BEEN THE CASE DURING THE RECENT COLD SPELL. AUTOMATIC QUALITY
CONTROL CHECKS INDICATE THAT THE DATA IS NOT RELIABLE BASED ON AVERAGE
ERROR AND STANDARD DEVIATION CALCULATIONS.

THE WEATHER SERVICE HAS AN OFFICIAL COOPERATIVE OBSERVER IN TOK
THAT REPORTED A LOW OF 63 BELOW. THE ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION (DOT) CAMP IN TOK REPORTED A LOW OF 60 BELOW.

Jesus... what does it take for them to say "ridiculously cold temperatures"??? I think we have our understatement of the year, thus far.
